Revisiting the 7 Lakes of San Pablo City | Laguna

May 19, 2022

In the decade that passed since I first explored the seven lakes of San Pablo City in Laguna my wanderlust expanded beyond the Philippines and to several countries in Asia. I consider my initial journey to the city of lakes as one of those earliest moments on the road that led me to choose a life of traveling.

The Blooming Organic Farms in CALABARZON

January 11, 2021

A couple of months removed from a travel writing assignment covering the vegetable farms of Cordillera, another opportunity to visit more agricultural destinations came to my inbox from the Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Training Institute (ATI). It was to join their first regional bloggers/vloggers event that aims to promote Organic Agriculture in the CaLaBarZon region (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon).

Caliraya | A Weekend Nature Rush at Aquascape Lake Caliraya

July 05, 2016

of Glassy Lake, Floating Cottage, Watersports and then Some

Nothing could come very timely than a chance to escape Manila’s gloomy weather. A typhoon just whizzed by the city and left a somber mood as bleak as the gray skies. An hour of buzzing through the southern highways leading to Laguna has revealed a sunny set of blue skies. “The weather is looking great, I thought it would ruin our trip” my friend Faith excitedly tells me as she steers the wheel of her car. Earlier in the week, an invite from Aquascape Lake Caliraya popped up on my inbox inviting me to visit their “small nature haven” located in the scenic surroundings of property at Eco-Saddle in Caliraya Lake. After a brief online introduction I said “Yes” and instantly, images of the lake stemming from earlier journeys to that part of Laguna came flashing back to my mind.

CheChe Lazaro Probes the Fertile Land of Lotus Pod Farm in Bay, Laguna

October 16, 2015

A man of many hats; early 20th century environmentalist, forester, ecologist, scientist and author Aldo Leopold wrote on his 1949 non-fiction book A Sand County Almanac, “There are two spiritual dangers in not owning a farm. One is the danger of supposing that breakfast comes from the grocery, and the other that heat comes from the furnace.”

Known for her gritty investigative journalism that threads the layers of stories she covers like needles, deeper into probing every facets of truth; renowned journalist CheChe Lazaro is taking that same passionate approach as she now follows Leopold’s train of thought - that man should foster a good relationship with the land they dwell on, by advocating organic and backyard farming.

Mang Kulas Pabili nga ng Tsinelas sa Liliw | Laguna

May 24, 2012

After our crypt incursion in Nagcarlan, we proceeded to the "Tsinelas" town of Liliw, Laguna. The town's main street is lined with stores selling the preferred weapon against cockroaches and other bugs. Kidding. I'm referring to casual footwear. Shopaholics like my friend Cathy will have a great time selecting from thousands of pairs of shoes and slippers. "I'll end up buying three pairs a day here," she said. At that rate, she'll be the next Imelda Marcos in three years.

Notes from the Underground Cemetery in Nagcarlan, Laguna

May 21, 2012

It was raining when we woke up as the skies remained gloomy until it ceased. The night's drizzle are still evident on the dripping plants and trees around Villa Sylvia and the slippery and muddy lawn. We left Abigail's unopened Tanduay rum and Fundador to one of the caretakers as token of niceties. Abigail left the previous day after concluding our lake hopping trip in San Pablo to attend a family gathering. That left me and Cathy finishing off the weekend by checking out the Underground Cemetery in Nagcarlan.

Lake Hopping in San Pablo City | Laguna

May 14, 2012

At the crack of dawn on Saturday, Cathy and I were already at the JAC liner terminal in Buendia, Taft, waiting for our travel companion Abigail, who had been hammered from a night of drinking the night before. Despite this, Abigail arrived only a few minutes after six a.m. It was my first time meeting her, and the awkwardness quickly turned into familiarity, as if we'd known each other for a long time, especially when she took out the Tanduay Rum from her bag while we were having breakfast at Cafe Lago.

Nomadic Video 4: Laguna Lakers (San Pablo, Liliw, Nagcarlan)

April 29, 2012

Since I started traveling around the Philippines three or four years ago, I've been to Mindanao, Visayas and the edge of Northern Luzon, doing so I was able to overlook nearby provinces like Laguna. Because of that  realization, along with a couple of cool friends, Cathy and Abigail, we set out on a trip to a menage a trois of cities and municipalities in Laguna. Our first stop was San Pablo, it is known for its seven crater lakes found around the city. We started our day by having breakfast at Cafe Lago which is located beside Lake Sampaloc, it was here where Abigail first brought out her Tanduay rum. After which, we took a swim at the scenic Lake Pandin and had lunch aboard a floating bamboo raft before heading out to Nagcarlan for some church hopping and going on a creepy tour of the "underground cemetery", after which, we dropped by the "tsinelas" capital of the Philippines in Liliw and had a feast at Arabel. Here is a music video of our trip, as compiled from the very few video footage I took accompanied by the music of Sneaker Pimps' "6 Underground". I will soon write separate posts about the places we visited on that trip.

Caliraya Lake

March 09, 2008
I tagged along my friend Don’s family who went and celebrated his sister Myla’s birthday at the Lake Caliraya Resort along with Don’s girlfriend Kathrina. The resort is as the name suggests is located along Caliraya lake in Laguna, it has amenities like accomodations, bar and restaurant, swimming pool, basketball courts, wall for wall climbing and of course the lake where guest can go fishing, go kayaking or just ride a horse all over the vast surroundings of the place.

After having our buffet lunch (900 pesos for the day tour + buffet lunch / pax) we went wall climbing – It’s been a long time since I last gone wall climbing and with the current shape i’m in I was a bit worried that I won’t get far up the wall, but the wall was fairly easy until you reach the inclined angle at the top when my fingers and hands and everything gave up, but Don made a career of giving it a try though hehe, he lost grip at the last minute offering excuses ranging from UFO manipulation to Global warming as the reason why he fell haha.

Don was trying to show everybody how it’s done.

Then 20 seconds before he falls down, he insists the Martians made him lose his grip.

After that we went for a swim, and a few days after that my arms and upper body hurts like punching bag at the wildcard gym of Freddie Roach.

Don and Kat then shoved it in me how its going as the third wheel. It was a fun time to enjoy the sunny weather and the cool breeze coming from Caliraya lake with all those trees around you, gives you a lot more reasons to take care of the environment.

But, Don still can’t stop worrying about his failed attempt at the wall, hey man loosen up, we can all try again next time.

And if you have some spare cash, you can also rent a jet ski and roll all over mad man style on Caliraya Lake.
