Masbate Travel Guide: 5-Day Itinerary Island Hopping and Seafood Feasting

A curated five-day journey through the wild cattle country of mainland Masbate, the dramatic coastal drop-offs of Ticao Island, and the raw sandy fortresses of Burias.

Day One

Mainland Pastures & Lighthouse

The 1890s Jintotolo Lighthouse standing atop a scenic hill in Balud

Morning Arrive on the southwestern tip of the Masbate mainland via a smooth 3-hour passenger boat ride from Culasi Port in Roxas City, docking at the tranquil town of Balud, or via plane from Masbate Airport. Settle into the community, prepare for an immersion into the province's rolling geography, and take a quick, short boat ride over to Jintotolo Island.
Afternoon Take a brief, rewarding hike to the 50-foot-tall Jintotolo Lighthouse, built in the 1890s as one of the country's 23 remaining Spanish-era watchtowers. Gaze at the 360-degree panorama of the channel where the wrecks of two WWII Japanese ships lie at the bottom. Afterward, spend the remainder of your afternoon cooling off and lounging on the fine sands of Alegria Beach, a beautiful local hideaway on Jintotolo Island.
Evening Head back to mainland Balud as dusk settles. Dig into a welcoming local feast featuring fresh coastal seafood caught earlier in the day.

Day Two

Balud Coastlines & Mangrove Canopies

Strolling the raw, peaceful coastal perimeters around the municipality of Balud

Morning Dedicate your morning to a detailed exploration of the pristine, off-the-beaten-path beaches hidden around Balud. Spend a lazy, relaxing few hours beach bumming and taking a soothing dip in the untouched, clear waters of Panubigan Beach, enjoying the quiet serenity of the coastline away from major tourist crowds.
Afternoon Head inland past picturesque countryside ranches to spend your afternoon at the Lumawig River Adventure Park. Indulge in a relaxing floating lunch or scenic cruise directly through a dense, thriving mangrove forest canopy, admiring the vibrant biodiversity of the river ecosystem.
Evening Return to your resort base to rest and refuel, preparing for your early morning transit across mainland Masbate toward the eastern islands.

Day Three

Ticao Island's Marine & Oceanic Cascades

The majestic view of Catandayagan Falls flowing directly into the open sea

Morning Cross the azure channel over to Ticao Island. Settle into the rustic Ticao Island Resort. Set off by boat to explore Halea Nature Park on San Miguel Island, an idyllic cove where you can enjoy beach bumming, pristine snorkeling, and swimming safely with dozens of friendly baby sharks.
Afternoon Cruise down the rugged coast to witness the jaw-dropping Catandayagan Falls. Towering over 100 feet high, it stands as an elite natural wonder—one of only approximately 40 waterfalls across the globe that debouche and empty directly into the open ocean. Wrap up your island loop by kayaking through the marshes of the 244-hectare Bongsanglay Natural Park, home to three exceptionally rare Sonneratia mangrove tree species.

Day Four

The Burias Island Fortress Odyssey

The otherworldly, fortress-like rock cliffs of Animasola Island

Morning Hop aboard a ferry to transition over to Burias Island, a premier eco-destination boasting massive tourism potential. Board a double-decked party outrigger boat from San Pascual to reach the dramatic shores of Animasola Island. Marvel at its striking, pristine beauty characterized by towering, layered rock cliffs and a sharp triangular sandbar extending into clear turquoise depths.
Afternoon Sail over to Tinalisayan Island to take an invigorating dip inside its crystal waters, enjoying a tropical sun-tan moment before indulging in a massive seafood boodle feast served right on the boat. On your route back, pass by the crucifix perched on top of Templo Island, observe the swiftlets nesting inside the Balinsasayaw House, and walk along the expansive, hat-shaped sandbar of Sombrero Island.

Day Five

Buntod Reef Sanctuary & Cowboy Culture

Catching a magnificent, deep reddish sunset glow over Buntod Reef sandbar

Morning Return to mainland Masbate and pass by the iconic heritage structure of Balay ni Bayot, the Masbate Capitol. If visiting in April, experience the energy of the Rodeo Masbateño Festival, celebrating the province’s proud livestock tradition with cattle matches, line dances by the capital, and livestock market auctions. Learn how this local cowboy culture traces its ancient roots back to Mexican Vaqueros rather than the American West.

Get ready to gorge on heaps of fresh seafood in Masbate

Afternoon & Evening Spend minutes leading to sunset exploring the Buntod Reef Marine Sanctuary. Walk along the sprawling, pristine sandbar beautifully managed by SAMAPUSI—a local organization of former blast fishermen who have successfully transitioned into dedicated "reef rangers." Watch the sky burst with an incredible, double-fold reddish sunset glow, before capping your expedition with a heaping seafood feasting adventure consisting of gigantic crabs, heavyweight fish, tiger prawns, and fresh scallops.

Travel Notes

Geographical Gateway: Due to its unique central geographical location, Masbate serves as an important, underrated crossroads gateway connecting the main island groups of Luzon and the Visayas. It is easily accessible via passenger ferries from neighboring provincial ports like Roxas City or direct airline hops into Masbate City. You can start your Masbate journey in Burias Island coming from San Andres Quezon, or at Ticao Island coming from Pilar, Sorsogon and adjust your itinerary.

Culinary Heritage: Prepare to gain weight willingly throughout your journey. Masbate boasts a rich agricultural and marine ecosystem, resulting in a lively culinary landscape that pairs exceptionally juicy livestock meats from local ranches with bountiful seafood spreads of scallops, crabs, and tiger prawns at very affordable prices.

Highlights: Snorkeling alongside baby sharks in the coves of Halea, witnessing a majestic waterfall empty directly into the ocean at Catandayagan, and strolling the pristine, wild sandbars of Burias are top core memories. Remember: This is a fast-paced itinerary, we suggest adding a day of rest in Ticao Island and another in either Burias or Mainland Masbate - where you can add the man-made Matayum lagoon, Tinigban Beach in Aroroy, to your schedule, to complete a 7-day itinerary.

Eco-Tourism Rangers: The conservation of local sanctuaries is deeply community-driven. Marine landmarks like the Buntod Reef Sandbar thrive due to local fishermen spearheading protection models, transforming old practices into sustainable reef-ranging systems that safeguard the province's pristine beauty.
