I’ve never forgotten what was, at the time, my longest road trip during my early backpacking years. As I made my way toward Matnog, the southernmost tip of Luzon, I found myself awed by Sorsogon's countryside, wondering if behind every mountain lay a hidden waterfall, a river, or another raw natural wonder. Countless return trips later, the province remains one of my favorite destinations in Luzon.
As part of the Bicol Region, a vast area in Luzon consisting of six provinces (Albay, Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte, Catanduanes, Masbate, and Sorsogon), Sorsogon occupies the southernmost tip of mainland Luzon, separated from Samar only by the waters of the San Bernardino Strait. Like its sister provinces in Bicol, Sorsogon stretches from mountains and waterfalls to beaches, lakes and surf breaks—and dotted with man-made attractions such as heritage towns, old churches, and stone and traditional houses. This, combined with its green countryside and delicious local cuisine, makes the long road trip here more than worthwhile. All of this contributes to Sorsogon’s reputation as an underrated destination that is sure to surprise any traveler.

Sorsogon isn’t about ticking off sights—it’s about taking it all in. Between volcano trails, long beaches, and sleepy coastal towns, it offers a version of the Philippines that most travelers would find appealing, where travel still depends on the great outdoors, slowing down and curiosity.
Why Visit Sorsogon
Sorsogon is the kind of province that rewards travelers willing to move slowly. Its attractions are scattered across a long coastline and inland towns, so seeing everything in a single weekend means spending more time on the road than actually experiencing the place.
One day might mean heading out to Donsol in search of whale sharks; another could take you to the surf breaks of Gubat, the beaches of Matnog, or the quiet landscapes around Bulusan. In between are old churches, ancestral houses, local markets and roadside eateries that give the province a character beyond its better-known attractions.
I have returned to Sorsogon several times since my early backpacking years, and that is probably the best reason I keep coming back: the province has never felt like a destination that can be completely checked off a list.

How to Get to Sorsogon
By Air
The easiest way to reach Sorsogon by air is through Bicol International Airport in Daraga, Albay. From the airport, the journey continues by road toward Sorsogon City, taking roughly three hours depending on traffic and your mode of transport.
By Land
Several buses travel between Metro Manila and Sorsogon City, with overnight departures being the most practical option for travelers who would rather sleep through much of the journey.
Expect roughly 10 to 14 hours on the road, although actual travel time depends heavily on traffic, road conditions and stops along the way.
It is a long ride, but it also puts Sorsogon into perspective. This is not a compact weekend destination where the major sights sit within a few kilometers of one another. The province is sprawling, and getting around is part of the experience.
Best Time to Visit
There is no single month that works best for every Sorsogon experience.
If Donsol whale sharks are your priority, plan around the season when sightings are most likely. For surfing, meanwhile, Gubat has its own rhythm dictated by the swells. The beaches of Matnog are best enjoyed when seas are calmer, while the rainy months can make some outdoor activities less predictable.
For a general Sorsogon trip, the drier months are usually the easiest for moving between towns and joining boat-based activities. But don't treat the weather calendar as an absolute rule. Conditions at sea can change quickly, and local operators are better placed to determine whether a particular trip should proceed.
Best Places to Visit in Sorsogon
Donsol Whale Shark Interaction
Donsol is best known for its whale sharks, locally called butanding, which pass through its waters during the season.
The important thing to understand is that this is a wildlife encounter, not an aquarium attraction. There is no guarantee that you will see a whale shark, and that uncertainty is part of what makes the experience different.
Donsol's approach has traditionally centered on regulated, non-feeding interactions rather than conditioning the animals to appear for tourists. Follow the local rules, listen to your guide and resist the temptation to turn the encounter into a race for the closest photograph.
Sometimes the best memory is simply seeing the shadow of a whale shark disappear beneath the boat.
Bulusan
Deep in the forested interior of the province lies Bulusan Volcano Natural Park, whose centerpiece is the heart-shaped Bulusan Lake. Surrounded by tropical forest and the slopes of Bulusan Volcano, the lake is a quiet place for kayaking, forest walks and birdwatching. Come early, when the air is cooler and the lake is calmer. When clouds settle over the volcano, the landscape takes on an entirely different character, with the mountain sometimes disappearing behind a veil of mist. The volcano itself also welcomes hikers whenever conditions and volcanic activity permit.
Also in Bulusan, take a therapeutic dip at Kambal Busay Falls which is just a 15-minute hike from Zoe's Resort & Eco Adventure Park, or head toward the coast to relax along the scenic, uncrowded shores of Dancalan Beach.
Juban & Irosin
Famous for its preserved Spanish-colonial ancestral homes, Juban is also where you'll find La Kristy Resort & Cold Spring, a refreshing retreat featuring cool, natural spring water pools surrounded by trees and dense vegetation. Nearby, surrounded almost completely by green mountain slopes near the base of Bulusan Volcano, the landlocked town of Irosin is seen as a potential wellness and agricultural hub of Sorsogon. It is widely known for its soothing natural thermal hot springs, cold springs, and eco-farm stay estates. Soaking in the mineral-rich waters of San Benon Hot and Cold Springs provides the ultimate therapeutic muscle relief after long days of trekking and coastal exploration.
Matnog & Santa Magdalena
At the southernmost tip of Luzon, separated from Samar in the Visayas only by the San Bernardino Strait, Matnog is the gateway to Sorsogon's best-known island-hopping trips. The main attraction here is Subic Beach, renowned for for its pinkish sand, although the color is more subtle in person than photographs sometimes suggest. Island-hopping tours typically include stops at Tikling Island and Calintaan Beach, as well as the opportunity to feed schools of fish at Juag Fish Lagoon. Just neighbor to Matnog, the quiet municipality of Santa Magdalena features Ubo Falls, a hidden waterfall reached through a forested stretch of countryside.
Gubat & Barcelona
Gubat has long been one of my favorite stops in Sorsogon, particularly for its surfing culture and uncrowded coastal areas.
Rizal Beach is the best-known surf area, but the appeal of Gubat extends beyond the waves. Life here moves at a slower pace, with fishing communities, modest accommodations and stretches of coastline that have yet to acquire the manicured feel of more commercial beach destinations.
For first-time surfers, local instructors can provide lessons and equipment. For experienced surfers, the attraction is simpler: show up when the swell is right and let the ocean decide how the day goes.
Barcelona is one of those Sorsogon towns where the past remains visible without needing a museum label.
The St. Joseph Parish Church faces the sea, while the ruins of the former Spanish tribunal, also known as the Gobernadorcillo House, stand nearby. Together, they provide a glimpse into the town's colonial-era history.
The setting is particularly memorable because the church and ruins are not isolated heritage objects. They remain part of the town's everyday landscape, with the sea immediately beyond them.

Sorsogon City
Sorsogon City is the primary transport hub and an essential base for exploring the rest of the province. Don't skip visiting the Sorsogon Provincial Capitol with its beautiful neo-classical architecture. For culture and history buffs, the Sorsogon City Museum offers deep dives into regional lore, while the Sorsogon Coliseum serves as a modern civic landmark amidst bustling dining options and local markets.
Other Sorsogon Attractions
Juban Heritage Houses: Explore the quiet streets lined with wooden Bahay na Bato ancestral homes preserved from the Spanish colonial period.

What to Eat in Sorsogon
Bicol Express: No visit to Sorsogon is complete without trying Bicol's iconic dish of pork simmered in creamy coconut milk, shrimp paste, and a generous kick of chili—a rich, spicy combination that perfectly captures the region's bold flavors.
Laing: One of Bicol's most beloved comfort foods, laing features dried taro leaves gently cooked in coconut cream with garlic, ginger, onions, and chili until every bite is creamy, earthy, and deeply satisfying.
Kinunot: A traditional Bicolano delicacy once commonly prepared with stingray—and historically, small shark—kinunot is slowly cooked in coconut milk with malunggay leaves and spices. Today, many restaurants opt for more sustainable fish varieties.

Where you stay depends largely on what you came to Sorsogon to do.
Sorsogon City is the most practical base if you want restaurants, transportation and easy access to the province's main roads. Donsol makes more sense if whale sharks are the main reason for your visit. Gubat is the natural choice for surfers and travelers looking for a quieter coastal stay, while Bulusan and Irosin work better for nature-focused trips.
Don't choose accommodation based solely on how attractive the property looks online. Sorsogon is geographically spread out, and saving money on a room can mean little if you spend the savings—and half your day—on transportation.

Where to Shop in Sorsogon
Sorsogon City Public Market: The central trading post for everything from fresh produce to local Bicolano delicacies and dried fish.
Karagumoy Handicrafts: In Bulusan, you can meet artisans who create beautiful woven crafts from the leaves of a plant called karagumoy (Pandanus simplex). The leaves are processed and woven into a variety of products, including mats (banig), hats, bags, baskets and other handicrafts.
Where to Eat in Sorsogon
Sorsogon's food scene is strongest when you stop looking for a single “best restaurant” and start paying attention to what people actually eat across the province.
Sorsogon City has the widest selection of restaurants and cafés, making it the easiest place to explore Bicolano dishes alongside more familiar Filipino food. Outside the city, smaller eateries and roadside establishments offer a less polished but often more interesting look at local cooking.

Connectivity & Cash: Mobile data signal can be incredibly patchy outside of main towns. ATMs are primarily located in Sorsogon City, so bring sufficient cash when heading to remote beach districts or waterfalls.
Transit Pace: Travel times in the province are generally longer than they appear on a map due to winding coastal and mountain roads. Plan fewer stops per day to avoid travel burnout and truly enjoy the slow pace of Bicol.

Generally, Sorsogon is very safe. However, always follow local guidance regarding sea swells during monsoon season and any alerts concerning Bulusan Volcano's activity.
During the peak whale shark season (March to May), it is highly recommended to secure your rooms and tour slots well in advance due to the influx of domestic and international visitors.
Depending on the regions explored, 3-7 days is the recommended stay.
From the airport terminal or Legazpi city proper, it is roughly a fast 3-hour road transfer by van or bus directly to Sorsogon City.
Subic Beach in Matnog is arguably the most iconic due to its pink-tinted sand, but other great spots include Dancalan Beach in Bulusan and Rizal Beach in Gubat.

Sorsogon works particularly well as part of a longer Bicol itinerary.
Travel north and Albay brings you closer to Mayon Volcano, while continuing toward Camarines Sur opens up another set of coastal and inland destinations.
From Matnog, the RORO crossing also provides a natural jumping-off point toward Northern Samar. For travelers exploring Bicol by road, Sorsogon can therefore be either the final stop before leaving the region or the beginning of a longer journey south.
Nomadic Experiences Take
I first came to Sorsogon during the years when my travels were on backpacker mode characterized by long bus rides and spontaneity than by carefully planned itineraries. I have returned several times since, and the province still has the ability to make me slow down. That may be Sorsogon's greatest appeal.
The famous attractions are worth the journey—Donsol's whale sharks, Gubat's waves, Matnog's beaches and Bulusan's landscapes—but they are only part of the story. The longer you stay, the more the province shifts from a collection of tourist stops into a place with its own character.
Sorsogon is not particularly interested in making travel effortless. Distances are long, weather can change plans, and some of the best places require patience to reach.
I've always liked destinations that ask something from the traveler. Sorsogon still does.
