Sunlight Ecotourism Island Resort (SETIR) Expands with Maldives-Inspired Salepan Villas | Palawan

February 01, 2024

A few years ago, when typhoon Odette pummeled southern Philippines but luckily spared parts of Northern Palawan, we found a pleasant refuge and downtime at Sunlight Ecotourism Island Resort (SETIR) on Culion Island during the tail end of our Coron, Palawan trip. We eventually made it to Culion after two days of island hopping and getting holed up in another Sunlight property in Coron town hotel while weathering the storm.

Sunlight Ecotourism Island Resort: Escapist Sanctuary in Culion | Palawan

February 10, 2022

A few days after typhoon Odette got us holed up in our hotel in Coron, we finally saw blue skies and the green light from the Philippine Coast Guard to set out on a sea voyage to Culion Island. Returning to the island formerly known as the “Leper Colony”, had me revisiting memories of dread when I first found out about its history from a prior visit almost a decade ago.

Culion Island is historic for a number of few unique reasons. One of which was its designation by the Americans to become a "segregation island" in 1901, where patients afflicted with Leprosy are brought, isolated and treated.

Imagining the Bloody Battles Fought at Fort Culion | Palawan

May 11, 2011
It was at the dead of the night and I was sweating because I know tomorrow's ain't guaranteed. From the darkness ahead, I can hear the war breathing of the enemy, waiting to pounce on our position, timing their attack. Any second from now I anticipate with dead reckoning the throngs of footsteps and the loud reverberations of their battle cries.
